Building links has long emerged as the ace to reach higher rankings. The more formidable links that point to your webpage, the more you're likely to rank higher. Any other effort to optimize a webpage pales when compared to building links. No wonder, 'link-making gurus' like Andy Hagans, Eric Ward and others charge the moon for their service.
What then will ordinary mortals like me and many others do to have weighty incoming links? In short term, there is practically no solution in this game except perhaps in 2 cases. One of course is that you've to shell out sizeable sum of money to link-experts.
The second also involves spending money, but here you've some amount of control on how you're willing to spend. I'm talking about text ads like Google AdWords.
When you plan a campaign or even if you just jump into AdWords fray, you stand to gain not only some amount of traffic, but also valuable knowledge about what keywords are those that viewers are clicking to find your site. There is a caveat. Unfinished sites do not augur well for any ad campaign.
The reason I pointed out an AdWords campaign for building links is because no matter what, your primary aim is to have visitors swarming at your site. But suppose you do have solid content, who knows you may as well gain some unasked incoming links.
Well, I for all reason and purpose harp on solid contents. Whatever it is that this site has achieved in roughly 8 months time (with 3 months hiatus in between as I was too busy with assignments), is only because of contents.
For a long while, I have been publishing in article directories like Ezine Articles, where the resource box will have links that point to this site. Many article publishers have used my articles in their sites, in each of which more and more incoming links came my way.
It is otherwise very difficult to get incoming links. One may point out leaving comments in forums and blogs help in building links. They do but how they matter in Google's scheme of things is a matter of conjecture. I do not know its 'mind' but I suspect such links do not add up to much.
In fact, even article publishing doesn't help these days since same content duplicated in hundreds of sites is something frowned upon by search engines while calculating value of links. See my post, Duplicate Content Renders Negative Value. Which is one reason why I do not submit my freshly baked writing to article directories unless it has turned vintage in my own site (and duly noticed by SEs).
Coming back to building links, my own take is that you need to be STEADY in your efforts. Bursts of sudden actions do not help. If you feel comfortable writing contents (the same as I do), do that but do it regularly. If necessary, hire a writer. It takes time, but if your writing makes sense to many of your viewers, you'll surely attain being termed an expert in your subject. See this excellent Beenstalk article on building links (a good example of how good resources are linked to without being asked).
But there are many other ways for building links. Going by Aaron Wall and Andy Hagan's 101 ways to build link popularity, writing content is but one of them. There are still 100 more. You can pick and choose any number from the list.
How many 'ways' would you choose? That depends on your 'appetite'. What I feel is important to remember is to NOT having your fingers in too many pies. For all your effort, that doesn't help in building links. For sure.
