Turning Tennis Into Checks

There sat in ones and twos the salespersons of this great company throwing fun
at each other. Would she be one of them, wondered Sally. She wasn't sure. Two
weeks have passed, yet no success. Fear of cold calling was gradually enveloping
her. Confidence seemed waning.
Looking about, Sally hoped a straw in the wind
would come her way. There was none. As if by instinct, she slowly let it sink in
her belief, her fear of cold calling. The sounds of fun seemed distant, the
clouds of failure pressing hard. She felt a light tap on shoulder.
Turning round
she faced Bob, her immediate boss. Was there a glint of hope in Bob's smile? She
thought so. Her mind wandered off.
Sally's was a happy persona, she did everything with heart. Acclaim was there
for whatever she did. And she seldom failed to rise to occasion. When the sales
job came her way, she knew it was meant for her. Reality however turned
different.
Cold calling fear prevented her to make any call. Initially she
thought the problem would soon blow over. Like it happened in many instances in
the past. But that was not to be.
For some strange reasons, her reluctance
persisted. She started doubting if she would ever overcome fear of cold calling.
Sally realized Bob was speaking to her. He exuded warmth and confidence. Sally
felt assured. They took the corner seats in cafeteria and Bob started telling
his story.
Fear of cold calling wasn't unique, Bob was saying. It happened to
everyone. In fact if it hadn't happened, it would be an exception. Bob passed on
tips to overcome fear of cold calling.
As they parted company, Bob was as
effusive as ever. "Take your time. You WILL do it", Bob shot off.
Sally felt Bob's positive influence working on her. After a long time she looked
happy and confident.
On way back from office, she picked up the book Bob suggested, "Successful Cold Call Selling". She noted it was a best-seller. So that proved she was not
the first to have experienced fear of cold calling. That assured her more.
Back home, Sally poured over the book, going through with eager anticipation. As
she raced through the pages, she felt ripples of excitement. The simple
techniques in the book appeared like giants of new discoveries. She felt raring
to go, constrained only by the dead of night.
Next morning, thousand flowers bloomed for Sally as she awoke from deep slumber.
Rushing through daily chores, she knew today would be different for her. She
wasn't wrong.
The first person she faced was the insurance agent working in the
spacious office down the road. Sally saw him earlier but never went up to him.
Today she smiled at him and gently drew him aside.
Sally made her first sale. She made 3 more sales during the day. And yes, she
overcame her fear of cold calling. With flying colors.
What did Sally have to say on her successfully tackling the fear of cold calling? "You CAN do it".
