An inescapable part of life is to know how to write a letter. Life would have been easy if same letter format could be followed to address every situation. That is not to be. So a love letter is as different from a letter of complaint as chalk from cheese.

Moe often we are not seriously bothered about the nuances of letter writing until it is upon us to write one. But there is no doubt that a good style and expression of a letter can indeed make a lot of difference.

We at Words2Content have informally attended to several 'letter writing' for our clients. It is time we thought we have a series of articles on how to write a letter. Admittedly, not everyone can be expected to be well conversant in English language, and so we hope the samples we have here can be of some help for him or her.

At the outset, 2 things need to be told. First, as briefly touched upon above, talking about how to write a letter, its type may broadly belong to one of 2 categories: personal letter and business letter. In either category, there can be many variations. For example, personal letter can be one to a friend or to an editor or suchlike.

Similarly, business letter can be an expression of future plan and request for funding addressed to a bank or financial institute. It can also be about severance of ties with an erstwhile partner.

Clearly then, a writer has to understand the purpose behind it when she familiarizes herself with the aspects of how to write a letter.

The second point is more circumspect. Since writing style varies from place to place, it is possible that our suggestion on how to write a letter differs from that of other experts.

What however doesn't change much is the way a letter is presented. True, a letter will differ in tone and objective depending on its purpose and prevailing conditions. But, irrespective of whether it's a personal or a business letter, it'll have 3 things in common: a welcome message in the beginning, main subject thereafter, followed by suitable courtesy ending.

Let's now delve into various types of letter writing. The following 2 links will lead you to different letter formats. We've given full versions of main text of letters as examples so that it is easy for anyone to simply pick up one and replicate it to suit necessity.

2. How to write a letter of recommendation

Our genuine efforts notwithstanding, we appreciate the fact that many people would going by their nature prefer to maintain a personal touch to any letter they write, while others would much rather opt for impersonal tone.
